What PSI and GPM Mean

PSI measures water pressure—the force that helps loosen material. GPM measures water flow—the volume that carries loosened dirt away. A high-PSI machine with weak flow may not clean large areas as quickly as a balanced machine with stronger GPM.

Cleaning units provide a simple comparison: multiply PSI by GPM. For example, 3,000 PSI × 2.5 GPM equals 7,500 cleaning units.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are cleaning units the same as PSI?

No. PSI measures pressure, while cleaning units combine pressure and water flow. Two machines with similar PSI can perform differently when their GPM ratings differ.

Is the machine with the highest cleaning units always best?

No. More power may be unnecessary or harmful for delicate surfaces. Also compare pump quality, duty cycle, weight, noise, maintenance, hose reach, and manufacturer support.

Why does GPM matter for contractors?

Higher flow carries debris away and can reduce cleaning time on large surfaces. Contractors should evaluate GPM alongside pressure, pump durability, water supply, and the accessories used.
